About Cluster Member Shannon Landin, Founder/CEO, Codecraft Works

This blog article captures the journey, mission, and impact of Codecraft Works, highlighting the innovative work being done to address the tech talent gap and the essential resources that have supported the company’s success.

In the ever-evolving world of technology, one company is making waves by addressing a critical need: bridging the tech talent gap. Codecraft Works, an Ed-Tech company founded by Shannon Landin, is leading the charge with its innovative approach to virtual synchronous training programs. By focusing on both industry training and K-12 STEM education, Codecraft Works is providing flexible, cost-effective solutions that deliver outstanding results for both businesses and educators.

A Calling Realized

Shannon’s journey into the world of Ed-Tech was driven by her personal experience in technology and her desire to create a better future for others. Reflecting on her career, Shannon recalls the pivotal moment when she realized her calling. “I had a wonderful life with flexibility, allowing me to be present for my kids, and I wanted to help others achieve that same balance,” she shares. This realization, combined with her volunteer work at her children’s school, where she noticed a lack of software education, led her to address a significant gap in the industry.

What started as small camps and training sessions quickly evolved into something much bigger. “When I asked if people would pay for this and saw the overwhelming response, I knew I was onto something significant,” Shannon explains. The widespread need for tech education was clear, and Codecraft Works was born.

Mission-Driven Innovation

At the heart of Codecraft Works is a passion for making technology education accessible to all. Shannon’s commitment to this mission is evident in every aspect of the company’s work. “I’ve done every job at the company, but I have fun giving them away too,” she jokes. “I love that part of our mission is providing value and serving anyone who’s interested.”

Codecraft Works is dedicated to opening doors for students who might not have traditionally seen a future in technology. By tailoring outcomes and showcasing the diversity of opportunities in tech, the company is helping students imagine themselves in technical fields and guiding them towards careers they may never have considered.

The Excitement of Impact

For Shannon, the most rewarding part of her work is seeing the success and growth of her students. “Even hearing one success story from a student can keep me motivated for a month,” she says. The impact of Codecraft Works is undeniable, with countless students benefiting from the company’s programs.

One of the projects Shannon is most excited about is Codecraft Works’ recent approval as a Registered Training Instruction (RTI) provider to deliver software developer and software analyst training aligned with national employment goals. This designation allows Codecraft Works to contribute to national workforce development while continuing to make a positive impact in the local community. The company is also wrapping up its second cohort of adult trainees in software development and software analysis for the aerospace industry, all of whom have received job offers contingent on successful compliance.

Another standout moment for Codecraft Works was negotiating a groundbreaking contract with the Brevard Public School District, which included a Data Protection Agreement (DPA) that has since become a standard for Florida school districts. This agreement has paved the way for Codecraft Works to expand its reach and impact across the state.

Pushing Boundaries and Challenging Conventions

Codecraft Works is not just another Ed-Tech company—it’s an innovator in the field. Over the past few years, the company has completely reimagined its business model, transitioning from an in-person services provider to a remote, distributed, virtual education company. This pivot has allowed Codecraft Works to partner with collaborators in ways that Shannon never imagined when she first started the company.

What sets Codecraft Works apart is its unique approach to blending technology with human interaction. “While we use technology to deliver high-quality, well-aligned, and consistent programs, we firmly believe that people matter,” Shannon explains. The company’s commitment to providing mentorship and support, in addition to cutting-edge training, creates a truly innovative and impactful learning experience.

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Looking back on her career, Shannon has valuable advice for those just starting out or looking to pivot into entrepreneurship. “The design process is so critical,” she emphasizes. “Start simple, build the simplest prototype, and be willing to change course if you see the signals.” She also encourages entrepreneurs to seek out relationships where they feel supported and trusted, and to never hesitate to ask for help when needed.

The Power of Essential Resources

Codecraft Works’ success has been bolstered by key resources and partnerships. Locally, Groundswell has provided a fantastic co-working space, strong community support, and valuable mentorship. WeVenture, the Space Coast Women in Defense chapter, and CareerSource have also played critical roles in the company’s growth.

Cenfluence and Florida High Tech Corridor have been game-changers for Codecraft Works, especially as the company looked to expand beyond its local community. These organizations have helped Codecraft Works network across the state, connect with like-minded individuals, and participate in statewide conversations. They have also provided essential support in the grant process, including introductions to key collaborators and guidance on federal contracting.

Looking Ahead

As Codecraft Works continues to grow and evolve, Shannon remains focused on her mission to upskill the workforce and bridge the tech talent gap. With exciting projects on the horizon and a commitment to innovation, there’s no doubt that Codecraft Works will continue to make a lasting impact in the world of technology education.
